PA11 vs. PA12

Mechanical properties of PA11 are superior in ductility, impact resistance, abrasion and fatigue resistance. Particularly at cold temperatures. The UTS is normally equivalent. However, the tensile modulus is therefore lower for PA11 than PA12. PA11 allows for more ductile part creation, or parts that require higher impact resistance. Why? Because of the underlying polymer crystal structure. PA12 has a monoclinic structure, which means the PA12 chains have to twist to form hydrogen bonds. PA11 is triclinic, so forms different crystal structures.

Thanks to the benefits in mechanical properties, PA11 is well suited to help achieve these goals. For example, since PA11 has excellent ductility, parts can be designed with thinner walls, resulting in lighter, lower-cost parts, reduced waste and faster production times. Since PA11 offers superior impact and abrasion resistance, parts will have a longer serviceable lifetime, again saving costs and reducing downtime for the systems in which they are incorporated.

Stratasys High Yield PA11 is a PA11 powder

PA11 (aka Nylon 11) is a preferred material in manufacturing due to superior part properties over PA12 and suitability to a wider range of applications. PA11 offers better mechanical properties compared to its petroleum-derived counterpart PA12. The benefits are most apparent in ductility, impact strength, abrasion and fatigue resistance, especially at very cold temperatures. For these reasons, PA11 is chosen when parts are made for production rather than prototyping.
